Frequently asked questions
Common questions people ask before using this tool.
What information does an IP address lookup show?
Public IP databases show the approximate geographic location (city, region, country), ISP (Internet Service Provider), organization, timezone, and network type. Precision varies; IP geolocation is accurate to city level in most cases, not street address.
Is IP address lookup legal?
Querying publicly routable IP metadata from IP geolocation databases is generally legal for legitimate troubleshooting and security purposes. Do not use results to harass individuals or violate privacy laws — respect GDPR, CCPA, and local regulations where you operate.
Why is my IP location showing the wrong city?
Geolocation is inferred from registry data and may lag behind ISP routing changes. VPNs, corporate proxies, mobile carriers, and satellite internet often report distant cities. If you see your ISP's central hub city, that is normal.
What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
IPv4 addresses use the familiar 32-bit format (e.g., 192.168.1.1) allowing about 4.3 billion unique addresses. IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses (e.g., 2001:0db8::1) enabling virtually unlimited addresses. This tool supports lookup for both formats.
Can I look up my own IP address with this tool?
Yes. Load the tool without entering any IP and it will automatically detect and display your current public IP address along with its geolocation data. This is the IP address that websites and servers see when you browse the internet.
How accurate is IP geolocation?
Country-level accuracy is typically above 95%. City-level accuracy varies by region and ISP — commonly 50–80% accuracy. Geolocation data is approximate and suitable for analytics and fraud detection, not for precise physical location verification.
